Fluidity and sleekness run deep in Ben Kidson’s new single (When I) Runaway, which makes it almost impossible to sit still to. The chorus is irresistibly danceable and catchy: this is a song that’s made for the dancefloor. A deep beat and a snappy melody topped off with his authentic-sounding, raw voice. Surprisingly, Kidson is inspired by the indie and punk scene as much as the pop scene. Attempting to bring the best of both worlds together, he explores punk aesthetic, distorted guitars, poppy melodies, and explosive beats in his music. It’s worth noting that he has mostly shifted to the pop side of the scale, so if you’re looking for pure unadulterated punk, you’re in the wrong place. But that’s no criticism. His genuine approach brings a refreshing quality to Kidson’s style. At least it makes for enjoyable and captivating songs.
