Cable tv’s James Yuill has many a project under his belt. When he is not touring the world with the likes of Phoenix and M83, he writes and produces music for artists such as Charlotte OC and Grace Savage. When it comes to his own music, Yuill strives to innovate his sound – moving away from acoustic guitars and house beats towards more expansive electronics. His newest track, “Caught Up”, harks back to the rich sound of the 80s and 90s, incorporating elements that are both nostalgic and thoroughly futuristic.
From the very first chord of “Caught Up” we dive into a sublime pool of synth magic. The punchy beat ushers in a blanket of cybery synths, while the seductively slow tempo allows us to fully immerse ourselves in the neon-lit atmosphere. There are hints of vapourwave-like nostalgia, balancing with a modern sensibility and radiant production. While this is a very sonically textured track, Yuill’s tentative and stripped back approach ensures a sound that is rich without being oversaturated, blending well with his double tracked vocals.
Like speeding off into the dusky remains of the sunset, “Caught Up” ushers in a feeling of indulgence and mystery, ready for the night ahead.
