Cal in Red are an indie-rock brother duo with a love of disc golf (look it up). Having begun their joint music career in 2018, the pair remain faithful to their personal, DYI approach, recording and mixing all of their music at home – or in their cousin’s basement studio. Their sonically sun-bright, atmospheric music deals with everyday anxieties and disconnects, while simultaneously injecting a sense of youthful optimism into these moments of reflection.
Opening triumphantly with bright synth chords and beachy guitars, “Act Like” is the sound of a blissful, sunny day. Evoking the hazy sound of Beach House and Small Black, the swaying melody and shoegaze shimmer create a hypnotising effect that permeates your very being. Despite its laid-back nature, there is an element of self-searching hidden within the lyrics, capturing the kind of inner monologues you have with yourself on the verge on sleep. Kendall Wright’s fresh, hushed vocals reassure us that we are “right” and that we “should”, leaving behind a trace of friendly support and personable warmth.
