Nottingham quintet Express Office Portico release dystopian look at alcohol dependency
With all that’s going on in the world, you’d imagine 2020 might prove a challenging year to form a band. But, whilst the rest of the world gorged themselves on banana bread and too many boxsets, Express Office Portico have been hard at work establishing themselves as one to watch. Following on from the pronounced acclaim of their debut single ‘I Like It Weird’, ‘Mishmesh’ considers the destructive capacity of alcoholism and the compulsive tendencies that facilitate it. Vocals by Tara Freeman and Billy Townsend are strikingly haunting: undulating and sliding through different keys to create a flowing – and disconcerting – wall of sound. Layered guitar lines slowly build and encapsulate one another in a form of melodic poeticism, surprising the listener with the delightfully unexpected.
