Hongza offers intuitive glimpse into contemporary politics with visceral EP ‘Gen Z’

Through unapologetic celebration of indie rock, ‘Gen Z’ is a nostalgic take on what self-identity would mean without the validation of social media. The EP opens with ‘Cure Me’, a full-bodied, guitar-laden examination of falling in love. “I’m so broken”, he sings, speaking to the insecurities of the self-aware generation. Electric feedback rings out in glorious tribute to the lo-fi imperfections of live music. In contrast, ‘Dream Eat Sleep’ is lighter, picking up pace and achieving an expansive sound. Exploring online dating, the track rejects the toxicity of social media and yearning for an authentic connection. The EP concludes with ‘Identity Crisis’, a powerful exploration into embracing identity and ethnicity. “I need to find myself… Why be unique when I can be a sheep?” Hongza’s lyrics are as insightful as they are poetic, offering a contemporary perspective on the indie rock genre. Political and rebellious, ‘Gen Z’ is a considered and insightful reflection of digital youthhood.
