Ethereal, atmospheric and hauntingly beautiful, Monk’s new track “Endoftheworld” is a hypnogogic lullaby for our dark times.
“Despite its gloomy title and difficult production circumstances, this long-distance collaboration is a poignant celebration of creativity that cannot be stopped even when everything feels like the end of the world.”
Meet Monk, the project of songwriter and vocalist Pichya Nimit and cellist Sean Peal. Their music strives to defy genre, taking elements from dreamy indie-pop as well as R&B and classical cello. As advocates and amplifiers for marginalised voices, Monk create music from the perspective of queer, POC experience. Following the 2020 release of their debut tracks, “Closer” and “Astronaut”, the duo is back with their latest endeavour, “Endoftheworld”, composed remotely over the course of lockdown.
Starting off with a delicate string arrangement, “Endoftheworld” builds up on its acoustic beginning with eardrum-pleasing hip-hop influenced beat and resonant 808s. Above the oscillating beat Pichya Nimit’s voice floats like a busy butterfly, simultaneously languorous and hyper-present in all aspects of the music. Sean Peel’s cello is beautifully, but subtly resonant – a true heartline of this carefully constructed track.
Despite its gloomy title and difficult production circumstances, this long-distance collaboration is a poignant celebration of creativity that cannot be stopped even when everything feels like the end of the world.
