Mountains Like Wax hit us with their newest single, ‘Boxing Your Ears’.
Nashville’s Mountains Like Wax don’t shy away from bold, textured sounds and anthemic dynamism. Mitchell Taylor and Sam Katz, the duo behind the project, are committed to writing music about the everyday journeys and struggles, while also incorporating a whole range of musical influences from Radiohead to Oasis. Their latest single, ‘Boxing Your Ears’ is no exception, detailing a moment of inner turmoil through a rich and vibrant soundscape.
Kicking off with subdued yet gritty guitars, ‘Boxing Your Ears’ develops into a densely layered track, full of rubbery synths, distortions and classic indie-rock drumming. There is a certain head-swirling wooziness to it, which, in the words of Mitchell Taylor, evokes the “moment when you’re drunk and you catch yourself in the bathroom mirror”. The chorus urges us to “Fake it until you can’t face it”, a sombre encouragement which nevertheless points to a kind of solidarity among the disillusioned.
‘Boxing Your Ears’ is not a cry of defeat, but an acknowledgment of the world’s absurdity and a determination to be heard through the cacophony of noise.
