Mancunian rock group No Vacancies purge their vexes with cathartic anthem ‘Bad Habits’

Borne from the longing feeling of wanting – but being unable to – spend time with someone, there’s a degree of frustration to No Vacancies’ latest single. Luckily for us, this frustration is expressed through the glorious cacophony of old-school rock’n’roll. Cymbals collide furiously with battered drums and electric guitars in a fit of incredible rage. ‘Bad Habits’ is, in their own words, “a contender of one of our best songs”, and it’s easy to see why. The Mancunian group feel at home here, with each of the four members given the opportunity to excel in their individual talents. With such a loud sound it’s easy to blur into one incoherent noise, but ‘Bad Habits’ is strategic in its use of layering. Lyrically, Will McGarrie’s raw and raspy vocals bounce playfully off the amp in cleverly-placed ebbs and flows. “I can’t breathe, I can’t see,” he screams, “She’s got me on my knees”. Fiery and unapologetic, ‘Bad Habits’ is a cathartic release of our innermost wrath.
