Glaswegians Pizza Crunch announce their return with an introspective alt-rock track ‘Motivational Substances’.
Hailing from all over Scotland, Pizza Crunch came together in Glasgow, where after only a short time together, they produced three debut singles that gained the attention of multiple blogs and radio stations, including BBC Introducing, BBC Radio 6 Music and Amazing Radio. Blending together 80s hooks with 00’s nonchalance, Pizza Crunch are not afraid to couch darker topics in upbeat sounds, wryly playing with their audiences and their expectations.
Spilling forth with sunny guitar riffs and pronounced drum-beat, ‘Motivational Substances’ declares itself to be a dynamic banger right from the onset. With a chorus sonically reminiscent of The Cure’s more optimistic tracks, this song hides a darker core behind all of the energetic bravado. As it switches between third and first person in the verse and chorus, the self-reflective narrative embodies a desire for change, speaking of the necessity of moving away from “motivational substance[s]”. This is the darker side of abundant hedonism, yet not all hope is lost, and creative release may yet save the day.
Balancing between alt-rock jubilation and eloquent introspection, ‘Motivational Substances’ proves that Pizza Crunch are not just another rock band.
