“When We Were Young” is an electro-pop dive into memory from Brooklyn’s Reliant Tom.
Reliant Tom is an indie pop duo and dance company consisting of Claire Cuny and Monte Weber. Following a chance meeting at a DYI show in 2015, the producer and choreographer/songwriter began to release music that centres around their eclectic and highly creative live shows. Their latest track, “When We Were Young”, began as a sorrowful and slow ballad, reflecting on the particular feeling of longing for days gone-by elicited by the pandemic. Nevertheless, the song was then reworked into an up-tempo melody, injecting a sense of optimism and hope for the future.
Starting off with a rock-like guitar riff, “When We Were Young” is quick to introduce vibrant electronic elements, making the track both wishfully nostalgic and exceedingly fresh. With its throbbing bass and echoing guitars, it seems to escape definition, taking us on a journey through memory. Claire’s vocals are somewhere between silk and sandpaper, gently touched with a twinge of melancholy and saturated with emotion.
