ROE and Ciaran Lavery explore the darker side of relationships in the devastating track ‘Destroyer’.
The self-described purveyor of “Existential Indie Pop”, ROE is a Norther Irish musical sensation with a singular ability to speak to the human heart. After gaining a spot on the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury when she was only 18-years-old, ROE went on to win Best Emerging Artists – Northern Ireland Music Prize only the year. Continuing to develop her sound, ROE released her 2020 debut EP ‘Things We Don’t Talk About’ to over 1 million streams on Spotify. ROE’s latest release, ‘Destroyer’ is a collaboration with fellow Norther Irish songwriter, Ciaran Lavery, that sees her explore a darker side of folk-pop.
Kicking off with grungy guitar riffs and ROE’s emotive vocals, ‘Destroyer’ launches into a ballad of existential conflict and tough realisations. The visceral, poetic lyrics are evocative of the pain associated with an unhealthy relationship, gradually progressing towards a triumphant emotional crescendo as they become instruments of resilience. “Destroyer, destroyer, destroyer” sing ROE and Ciaran Lavery in gentle harmony, turning the word into an incantation that strips the villain of their power.
An honest and deeply moving track, ‘Destroyer’ is not a cry for help, but an assurance of one’s own power in the face of adversity.
