Family-unit Ruthee release soulful ballad with their second track ‘Drag’.

There’s something exciting about unexplored avenues of creativity: not knowing where to go next, or even what it might look like. This is certainly true for Ruthee, who are excitingly blunt about the journey to finding their niche. ‘Ruth’ is their second track on this musical self-discovery, and marks an impressively atmospheric sound for a band who only started releasing music this year. Borne of an abusive relationship, ‘Drag’ refers to the controlling guidance of a toxic lover. “Keep what’s fragile on a tight leash” sings Olivia Gomez, underscored by the roomy instrumentals of husband Nicolas, and his brother Ben.

Understandably, there’s a melancholy to Ruthee’s work, but also a sense of strength. The band describe ‘Drag’ as “driving at night with the windows rolled down”, but it’s more than that - it’s the feeling of life unfolding in all of its ugly truth. Expansive and emotive, ‘Drag’ makes for a euphonious exploration of the uncontrollable.
