The musical project of Mary Norris and Noelle Taylor, Salti Ray is an act to look out for. Having released their debut EP “The Right Thing” last September, the duo has risen to prominence within the South-eastern music scene, which earned them a nomination for the Best Live Act at the Upstate Music Awards. With their follow up single, “Luxury”, Salti Ray are looking beyond their beach-pop beginnings and towards new modes of expression that capture their reality.
Ephemeral shoegaze guitars are our point of entry into this track, but in spite of their promise of easy gentleness, “Luxury” progressively reveals its tortured and impassioned face. As hazy distortions move away from romanticism, this guitar-laden track grows into a fervent chorus, transforming Norris’ soft vocals into a resonant outpouring of emotion. Intermixing sound bites from South Carolina’s Governor with the cries of its disaffected citizen, the track erupts into a frenzy that encapsulates the maddening state of the world, overwhelming the listener with the sheer scale of its booming sound and the urgency of its message.
