The New Zealand alt-pop band Skymachine are as dreamy as their name suggests, evoking a profound sense of nostalgia with their 80’s influenced sound and ephemeral visuals. The brain-child of producer Brydon, Skymachine was always a labour of love and a labour of friends; born out a desire to lend a helping hand to a friend who needed an opening act for a show, the band continuous to be a fluid and fun endeavour.
Opening with a lo-fi beat and a sprinkling of spacy synths, “Kick Down The Alamo” establishes a nostalgic atmosphere that is the perfect soundtrack for late night ruminations. As the track progresses, deep guitar base intermingles with a simple, steady beat and an echoing guitar riffs, all the while supporting Brydon’s diverse vocals, which fluctuate between throaty sonority and a sparkling falsetto. With lyrics as resonant and reassuring as “when its 4 am and you need somebody/ I’ll be there for you”, the track is imbued with irresistible romanticism and wistfulness, making you long for the mysterious promise of the night.
