Sometimes in an exploration of sound, an artist stumbles onto something brilliant. Such is the case for Tall Kingdom, the Leeds quartet who are back with their latest short-form release featuring the vocal talents of Marija Clara, Fourth EP.
Melting together the rich texture of classic 70s music with fascinations of hip hop, psychedelic and electronic, the band have created mountainous journeys of sound made from high altitudes of soul, crevices of synth and glaciers of refreshing vocals. Opening with title track ‘Fourth’ they turn intoxication into an ice bath, soothing your muscles in hazed words melting away amongst the waves of instrumentation. Middling ‘Unison’’s melody twists in its own meandering path where the only unity can be found in the listener’s body moving along to the beat, while closing ‘Mansion Gate’ draws everything to a perfect conclusion as it slowly climbs up and just to dissolve away into bubbling clouds.
