Manchester quartet The Deep Blue confront the insidiousness of patriarchal violence through feminist anthem, He Said She Said.
Written in response to section 72 of The Domestic Abuse Act of 2021, He Said She Said is released at a particularly poignant time in the fight for equality. But what is unquestionably a harrowing topic is re-framed through a lens of strength, with three-part vocal harmonies emulating an unbreakable sense of community and sisterhood. “We offer this song as a voice for the countless women who have been harmed by or lost their lives to domestic or sexual violence”, they say of the inspiration behind He Said She Said, “We’re not here to make your cry, we’re here to light a little fire in you”. Lyrically, the track addresses a number of stereotypes and confronts the damaging effects of gender roles in reinforcing misogynistic structures. Minimalist guitars and kit-work underpin the single, creating a rich and mellow backdrop that simultaneously allows for space through which their overarching call-to-arms can emerge.
Thought-provoking and vital, He Said She Said finds power through community in the fight against patriarchal violence.
