TYO’s experimental EP “I Wanna Do It But I Wanna Do It Right” is a kaleidoscope for the ears.

German-Asian multi-instrumentalist TYO bares himself to all in his genre-defying EP “I Wanna Do It But I Wanna Do It Right”. Exploring his identity and defiantly pushing at the edges of musical convention, TYO’s work is unafraid to ask hard questions and challenge established norms – determined in its search for a unique form of self-expression that is both true to his own experience and relatable to his audience.

The EP is a sonically ambitious, narratively driven and thoroughly textured collection of music. Interspersed with extradiegetic sounds of pinging texts and stray bits of conversation, it incorporates a variety of musical elements, from Hip-Hop and hints of old school R’n’B, to lo-fi aesthetics, while TYO effortlessly switches from rhythmic rap, to harmonies and softer vocals reminiscent of Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes. This all might sound too much, but trust me, it’s not. Every single element – from highly satisfying beat drops in “SIN” to the sudden change of gear in “Understanding (Rest easy Mac)” – works in an eclectic harmony with the rest, unified by TYO’s unabashed honesty. As we peer into his reflective, semi-private conversation with himself in “Too Strong For Too Long”, we can’t help but relate to his self-searching, vulnerable and deeply heartfelt song-writing.

Musically eclectic, narratively engaging, personally relatable and just plain fantastic, “I Wanna Do It But I Wanna Do It Right” will haunt and elate you with its humanity.
