Julia Lucius celebrates her country roots with bittersweet ‘Stay A While’

There’s a warmth to ‘Stay A While’. Stemming from Julia Lucius’ rural childhood growing up in an RV park, the track has a distinct feeling of contentment. Her chosen genre is disco-country, a term coined to depict the “marriage of her rural upbringing and love for the city”: a liminal space that negotiates the ties of home and the yearning for something else. Lyrically, ‘Stay A While’ navigates a fear of intimacy. “I’ve been afraid of getting close,” she sings, “I’m always pushing everyone away”. But there’s a happiness to the track; an appreciation for the simpler things in life set against the opposing backdrop of longing, and the potential rewards of leaving everything behind. Glorious harmonies dart across synth-laden instrumental in small pockets of crescendo, ebbing and flowing through the imaginary contours of daydream.

Rich and joyful, Julia Lucius expertly articulates the agonizing contradictions of a better life.
