Meet the French musical collective Who Parked The Car and their eclectic track ‘Candle Dance’.
What do you get when you combine the efforts of 8 highly talented young French musicians? Well, you get the unforgettable, genre-melding sound of Who Parked The Car. Having studied at some of the most prestigious music schools of Paris, the group came together through their shared appreciation for technique and the emotive power of music. With a string of singles to be released this autumn and a debut album to come in 2022, there is plenty of time to fall in love with this collective’s idiosyncratic sound.
Kicking off with some woozy harmonies, ‘Candle Dance’ blossoms into a genre-defying jam that feels like the essence of a celebration. The groovy rhythm of funk guitar grows out of rubbery synths, supported by soaring saxophones which alternate as if in conversation. In comes a maddening piano improvisation, which slowly melts into some spacy synths. The disco-twinged vocals are the cherry on top, distantly reminiscent of disco-legends like CHIC. On paper, these elements may seem like a lot, but when this mixture of sounds hits your ears, it is perfection.
Part free-jazz, part future-funk, part electro-disco and just all-round magic, ‘Candle Dance’ is a groove like no other.
