British, Indie nonchalance at its finest- Montrell’s latest single ‘Magnets’ is a finely-tuned equilibrium of ultimate laidback ‘coolness’ and real emotional depth.
Impelling percussion, melodious bass, overdubbed lead vocals and the surprising, but nevertheless genius inclusion of the middle 8 vocal section harmonies; each element of the arrangement has its own quirk or grittiness which gives a jaunty, yet intense and almost monotonous quality to the song. That’s not to say that the fundamentals of indie music aren’t mastered to a T, with each component of the track marrying together to create a lively and attention-grabbing slice of Indie Rock goodness. Beneath the sonic surface, Montrell have gone deeper still, in their transmission of a tale of addiction and the importance of being surrounded by the right people to get you through.
A yin and yang of sorts- ‘Magnets’ in so many more ways than one, is a complete harmony of ostensible indifference and breeziness, with a tangible and unquestionable meticulousness and care for the craft.
