Sovereign’s anthemic ‘Purple Heart’ is sure to steal yours.

Sovereign is more than your average pop-rock act. The three talented Danes – Frederik Milland, Lous Gjerrild and August Anderesen – are childhood friends and have long been making music that doesn’t sugar-coat dark emotions, nor shies away from explosive sounds. Their upcoming EP ‘Wanderer’ is the perfect example of their musical intentions, following a chronological narrative of lead singer Frederik Milland’s personal struggle and his journey to self-understanding.

Rousing and reflective, ‘Purple Heart’ seeps into your subconscious and doesn’t let go. Echoing guitars intermix with an 80s synths line that is reminiscent of Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is”, giving the track underlying warmth and highlighting the airiness of Milland’s vocals. The track shifts through phases of descent and elevation, with quieter moments serving as launch pads for the soaring chorus and an energetic bridge section that ushers in a final crescendo. With lyrics as searching as the music, ‘Purple Heart’ deals with personal crises and their public consequences, allowing the listener to both reflect on and escape their own worries.

A quarter-life crisis personified, ‘Purple Heart’ is a moving and captivating track that transforms personal darkness into a glorious creative outpouring.
