The Still release stunning acoustic debut with melancholy hit ‘Safer Days’

As far as debuts go, you’d struggle to find a more accomplished sound than Melbourne duo, The Still. ‘Safer Days’ – their lead single - is a melodic tapestry, skilfully intertwining the gentle acoustic instrumentals of Nathan Gables with temperate vocals provided by Sam Lawrence. “Take me back to safer days”, he sings, “Drink my mind away”. At its core, the track is a beautiful kind of melancholy, candidly reflecting upon the rough terrain of the human experience. Rich arrangements sporadically blossom throughout the track, cleverly providing sanctuary from the hardships of life in an intriguing experimentation with texture. The single stands in testament to the extensive – though disparate – musical backgrounds of the pair, having between them mastered everything from jazz, orchestral and classical Indian music in experiences spanning several thousand air miles. Polished yet playful, ‘Safer Days’ exemplifies the healing capacities of song.
