Canadian duo Wotts dance to their own beat with nostalgic 70s hit ‘Before’

Taking inspiration from the metallic twangs of 70s synth, Wotts exude a modest confidence in their latest track, ‘Before’. There’s an emphatic sense of musical security – this Canadian duo have certainly found their sound, and they’re not afraid to be playful with it. No doubt this creative freedom is intrinsic to the band’s approach, having recently made the conscious decision to “forgo what was best from a music marketing perspective and lean into making whatever gets them tapping their respective Canadian toes”. There’s a delightful curiosity to the track’s production, with digitally-enhanced echoes and harmonies underscoring vocalist Jayem’s hazy contributions in a psychedelic trip through the trials and tribulations of a long-term relationship.

At its heart, the track is about personal growth: how people change over time and how compatibilities melt into the simmering amalgamations of the human experience. It’s a fitting subject for a duo who have so gloriously grown into their own.
