Take ‘Shelter’ in Joakim Daal’s gloriously cinematic debut single.

‘Shelter’ may be Joakim Daal’s debut single, but it sure doesn’t feel like one. Born in New York to Finnish parents, Joakim has a background in jazz and classical music, although he only began writing his own music after an exposure to Montréal’s vibrant DIY pop community. After years of patiently honing his sound, Joakim’s debut track is a testament to his wide-ranging musical experiences and to the power of his rich, singular vision.

‘Shelter’ is the kind of music you sink into, like into a warm sonic bath. A sumptuously nocturnal jazz-filled atmosphere is revitalised with a bold art-pop arrangement, mixing rhythms and sounds into a heady musical cocktail. The deep, pulsating sound of the tentative drums serves as a base for the dusky piano and the vibrant cry of the saxophone, blending disparate tones with elegant simplicity. Joakim’s warm tenor is the ultimate binder, floating in and out of the track like a bubbling current and lulling us into sweet submission.

Surrounding its listener with seductive magic, ‘Shelter’ is a palpably luxurious track that is felt with every inch of your skin.
