KC Blackwater invites us into the menacing world of ‘Happy Smiling Faces’ in his explosive debut EP.

Milton-Keynes based Cameron Owden – aka KC Blackwater – is a revelation. Having played indie-pop-friendly music with Alfie Templeman, he is now ready to reveal his darker, more visceral side with his debut EP ‘Happy Smiling Faces’. Written, recorded and released within the space of a month, the three track EP embodies the energy and vitriol of a live performance, bursting with unrestrained emotion and apt social observations. Dark, menacing and deeply heart-felt, it is creative expression at its most powerful.

Kicking off with the wail of echoing, distorted guitars, the first tack of the EP – ‘Faceless’ – plunges us straight into the hazy world of KC’s internal turmoil. The moody bass and pounding drums punctuate every word of the introspective lyrics, blending seamlessly into the second track, ‘Rists’. Here, the pace picks up, courtesy of the rolling guitars and staccato vocals that sustain the nightmarish, tense atmosphere. In a moment of quiet KC reflects, dejectedly, on whether “you can feel anything at all” before yet again spiralling into an anxious wall of noise. The EP concludes with KC’s debut single, ‘Fungi’ an acridly punny confrontation that is purposefully in your face. “Do you feel uncomfortable?”, he wails as guitars blend with his manic laughter.

Like a sad clown, KC Blackwater subverts our musical and emotional expectations, playing with words and chords with frenetic energy and dark, twisted wit.
