Look out onto the ‘Citylights’ with Marianne Engebretsen’s wistful new track.

Norwegian artist Marianne Engebretsen has been taking over Scandinavia and beyond with her playfully ethereal sound. Having gained exposure through the Norwegian version of The Voice, her songs have been featured on Swedish and Norwegian radios as well as in a number of international music blogs. Now, Marianne is looking forward to the release of her second album, Something New, as well as to having her music featured in the upcoming Norwegian blockbuster Nordsjøen.

Like the feeling of longing for something you can’t quite put your finger on, ‘Citylights’ evokes a sense of enveloping atmosphere that coats every note with gentle wistfulness and pent up desire. Contrasting the scattered sounds of the street with the gentle, starlight-like twinkling of the synths, the track unfolds like a scrapbook of memories. Warm chords of the acoustic guitar gradually pick up the pace, while the resonant depth of the sub-bass brings out the texture of the harmonised vocals. The tentative, angular rhythm of the songs speaks to the general feeling of unease that stems from Marianne’s loneliness, eventually finding solace in the beauty of the music.

Iridescent and evasive, ‘Citylights’ captures complex emotions in a glowing sonic landscape.
