Rikii joins forces with baron. to explore the impacts of a toxic relationship in his latest single ‘Guess’.
Based in Western Canada, Rikii is a classically trained violinist who has since switched his attention to edgy indie-pop, seeking to capture complex emotions in a dusky musical haze. Following the success of his previous EPs – Maybe I Think Too Much (2021) and The Weather Changed (2020) – Rikii is teaming up with long-time collaborator baron. for an honest exploration of toxic relationships and their impact on mental health in his track ‘Guess’. Ushering in a darker and richer sound, ‘Guess’ looks towards a renewed song-writing energy and increased introspection from the artist.
Built around the hollow, strumming core, ‘Guess’ blends acoustic sensibilities with a dark, electronic treatment, creating a textural sonic experience that feels like a liminal dream. As the heavy bass pulsates, an underlying sense of disquiet grows with increasing vigour, spurred on by the vulnerable lyrics describing a toxic relationship. The sprinklings of cinematic strings insert a sense of pathos into the track, while also brining a taste of Rikii’s classical training.
Saturated with emotion and visceral storytelling, ‘Guess’ is a dusky sound of heartbreak that is as haunting as it is sonically exciting.
