Embrace your own ‘Pretty’ with Scott Helman’s affirming new track.

Canada’s Scott Helman isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Apart from dominating the Canadian music scene and touring around the world with the likes of Tegan and Sara, Shawn Mendes, Vance Joy, Walk Off The Earth and Daniel Lewis, this seven-time JUNO award nominee campaigns to raise awareness of the climate crisis. In his latest track, ‘Pretty’, Scott playfully addresses another prescient issue of our age – the shift in traditional gender norms and the path to one’s own unique expression.

Resting on a bed of layered bouncy beats, ‘Pretty’ boasts a relatively sparse arrangement that propels Scott’s voice to the forefront. There is nowhere to hide and the deeply confessional lyrics want none of that; instead, they are gently resonant, sometimes conspiratorially hushed and at other times belted out with full force. The accompanying music video builds on the song’s intimate vibe, capturing Scott experimenting with his appearance and letting go of the restrictive gender norms.

Scott is not ashamed of who he is and how he feels, and he invites us to share in his experience and to find our own source of confidence.
